Art Battle is a live painting contest where artists act to generate original, imaginative, original pieces within 20 minutes. The audience votes to determine who moves on to the next round, with the winner revealed at the end.

This was my first Art Battle night! It was filled with a vibrant Music MC, positive energy, interacting with the spectators.

• People cheering and reacting in real time

• Artists are literally figuring it out live.

The Thrill of Live Creation

Not the typical Sunday drawing class, quietly taking your time pondering proportions, depth and shadowing.

This involved a whole new set of rules. Risk-taking painters pushed beyond their comfort zones, plunged into a chaotic creativity with a strict time limit. No opportunity to reflect or doubt. Nevertheless, as time decreased, you could feel the intensity of the moment and the surmounting pressure of creation. Life stood still as everything converged to the moment. It was closer to a concert or Olympic event than a traditional art show.

What to Expect

Booming music, prepared palette trays, the limited space, the flashing strobe club lights.

Another great artist came to see: my dad Jonathan. Recently, he's taken on a large watercolor painting.

A tight group of people, standing just a few feet away from the artists, observed the battle first hand. It was definitely intoxicating witnessing other artists quickly developing their ideas.

The only goal: Getting a half decent painting completed in 20 minutes.

I didn't win. But I'll definitely be up for it next time.

Pushing your Boundaries

Not only do audience members discover local talent, but artists gain exposure and connect with actual people. I never anticipated it to be so thrilling, filled with adrenaline, with people leaving the scene in awe and wonder.

After this experience, I now have a new added perspective with a blend of solutions ready for action based on this night of creativity.

I really recommend people to go out on limb to try something different at least every month. Be vulnerable, uncomfortable, somewhat prepared. Take a risk to see where it takes you!
